#GivingTuesday 2016 Help us show Seniors hope Lives Here!

Ypsilanti Meals on Wheels believes that no senior should have to face the threat of hunger or should have to choose whether to buy medicine or food. YMOW also believes no senior should go a whole weekend without having access to health food. Unfortunately, in 2007, YMOW was forced to eliminate Saturday meal delivery service due to a reduction in funding at the federal, state, and local levels. Today, YMOW feels that it is vital that we resume delivering Saturday meals to our senior neighbors. This one additional daily delivery will increase our clients’ food security, while decreasing clients social isolation.

We believe we can provide this service thanks to our generous supporters who come through. It is our goal to raise $100,000 by December 31st, 2016 and thanks to the Home Instead Senior Care Foundation #GIVINGTUESDAY match program we can turn $5,000 into $10,000 for a second time this year – Thank you for your generosity. So, far we have over $30,000 pledged and we know that during the Holiday giving season we can raise the additional $70,000 that is needed.

What the Research has found:
Many of our clients need assistance in shopping and preparing food. Research by Brown University found that individuals within Meals on Wheels programs were 4 times as likely to require assistance shopping for groceries and in preparing food than the national population of older adults. This is why our clients may go an entire weekend without having a hot nutritious meal if we do not provide them with one. Many of our clients have told us that they save food from their meals during the week to eat on the weekends. This type of nutritional variation can severely affect an elderly person’s health, especially if they have diabetes or other health conditions. A review published by Nutrition and Health in 2014 stated that, “Home-delivered meal programs are effective in improving regularity of dietary patterns while reducing food insecurity and helping with diabetic control.”

The slogan for Meals on Wheels of America is” Together, we can deliver”. With your support WE CAN DELIVER a Saturday meal, and together we can fight to end senior hunger.
