Minor Home Repairs

Preventing a life-changing fall can be as simple as installing a shower grab bar or fixing an uneven stair. But when you’re elderly and living alone on a limited income, even the simplest chore can be impossible.

Clients receiving meals from YMOW may be eligible for repairs to increase their home’s safety.

  • Uneven floors, loose railings, lock repair and installation of bathroom grab bars are among the services available to clients in need.
  • To be eligible for the YMOW home repair program, a client must be a homeowner over the age of 60 with limited income.
  • Home repairs are limited to those needed to ensure safety of the client and do not include general maintenance such as roof, window or furnace replacement.
  • While clients are not required to contribute to the cost of repairs, contributions are appreciated and help us to provide necessary repairs for other clients in need.
  • YMOW partners with pre-screened and insured independent contractors to complete any repairs requested by the client and deemed necessary by the YMOW Case Manager.

Home repairs also are part of CAPABLE, a joint undertaking between YMOW and Habitat for Humanity of Huron Valley.

CAPABLE provides seniors with a support team that can help with small but important changes to the client’s home and personal health, leaving them more CAPABLE of aging well in their own home.

Seniors who participate in CAPABLE are provided with minor home repairs and modifications, occupational therapy, and guidance from a nurse and social worker to make themselves stronger, more confident and CAPABLE.

For more information about CAPABLE, contact Executive Director Alison Foreman at (734) 487-9669.
