If you have high blood pressure, you are far from alone. Nearly half of American adults have high blood pressure, which is also called hypertension. That number climbs to over 70% for adults 60 and older.
Though common, high blood pressure is far from harmless. Uncontrolled hypertension can lead to heart disease, stroke, vision loss, organ damage and even dementia. But there are things you can do to protect yourself. May is Blood Pressure Awareness Month – a great time to consider what you can do to keep your blood pressure in check.
- Follow a Heart-Healthy Diet: Seniors should focus on a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. By eating meals from YMOW, you already have a good start!
- Stay Physically Active: If you are able, try to move your body for at least 30 minutes each day.
- Take Medications as Prescribed: Many seniors need blood pressure medications. It’s important to take them consistently and report any side effects to a healthcare provider. Never skip or change dosages without consulting a doctor.
- Limit Alcohol and Avoid Smoking: Alcohol should be consumed in moderation (no more than one drink per day), and smoking should be avoided entirely.
- Manage Stress: Chronic stress can raise blood pressure. Try relaxation techniques like deep breathing, mindfulness, and engaging in hobbies. Even taking time to chat with a friend of your YMOW associate can help.
- Get Regular Checkups: Your doctor can help monitor your blood pressure and adjust treatments as needed.
