A phone call, a mattress, and a shower chair changed 63-year-old Marian’s life.
Suffering from back pain and unable to work or drive, Marian was in a bad place when, on the advice of her doctor, she called Ypsilanti Meals on Wheels in May 2025.
“I was out of food,” she said. Soon, she had food and so much more.
After Marian’s initial assessment and enrollment in the home-delivered meals program, YMOW Nurse and Case Manager Kathy arranged transportation through The Ride, making trips to see the doctor much easier and more affordable.
Kathy also suggested a visit from YMOW Occupational Therapist Bridget. On her first visit, she and Marian talked about how Marian might find relief from her back pain. Through YMOW’s Safe at Home program, Bridget provided Marian with a bed to replace the tattered mattress on which Marian had been sleeping for more than a year.
She also gave Marian a to make bathing safer and easier.
Using the bench, Marian can reach her lower legs and feet for the first time since her back injury.
“I wouldn’t be able to do anything without Safe at Home,” Marian said. “I couldn’t be more grateful.”
