Our top priority at Ypsilanti Meals on Wheels is to see that no senior goes hungry, no matter the time of year.
We also believe that no one should have to spend a holiday alone. Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day deliveries ensure that every YMOW client enjoys a holiday visit. By volunteering your time during the holiday season, you will provide local seniors and homebound neighbors with a hot meal, a warm smile and a reminder that someone cares.
Holiday volunteers use their own vehicles to deliver meals to 10-12 homebound neighbors between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Maps and turn-by-turn directions are provided.
Some volunteers choose to bring treats or small gifts to the seniors on their delivery route. This is a great way to make the day extra special for both the senior and the volunteer. However, many people who receive meals from YMOW are diabetic. For that reason, it’s best to avoid sugary treats.
In lieu of candy or baked goods, consider a gift of fresh, ready-to-eat fruit, coffee or tea. Word search books are always a welcome treat.
Because many YMOW volunteers are college students, we also have an increased need for help in the weeks surrounding the holidays. Individuals, families, teams and groups are encouraged to contact Volunteer Coordinator Jessica Cichowlas at (734) 217-4450 or volunteer@ymow.org to schedule a day (or more!) to help.
